Fort Morgan Historic Site

Experience the Historic Fort Morgan on Mobile Point

Located at the tip of the Fort Morgan Peninsula on Mobile Point, the Fort Morgan Historic Site is both a historic site and nature preserve with a picnic area, beaches, and a boat launch. This scenic and historic site is an educational destination that all ages will love.

Fort Morgan was built between 1819 and 1833 and is currently registered as a U.S. National Historic Landmark and listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.

Fort Morgan History

Fort Morgan was active during the Civil War and World War I, and specifically played a significant role in the Battle of Mobile Bay in August 1864. Additionally, the fort was utilized sporadically during the Spanish American War.

Between 1900 and 1923, the site was the largest permanent military base in Alabama. During these times, the U.S. Army and Navy occupied the space and by 1944 the site was abandoned for the final time.

Things to do at Fort Morgan Historic Site

Besides history buffs, bird watchers will love visiting Fort Morgan. During the fall migration season, Fort Morgan is host to a variety of bird species traveling south for the winter. They also stop at Fort Morgan during their journey back in the spring.

Fort Morgan is designated as one of "One Hundred Globally Important Bird Areas" by the Alabama Coastal Birding Trail, and it's a part of the Alabama Coastal Birding Trail. The protected dunes and marshes are marked along the shoreline and are endangered species habitats, including turtle nests.

Fort Morgan is a dog-friendly site, but dogs are to be kept on leashes and are only welcome at the Old Fisherman's Wharf Beach. Keep in mind that beyond that point is a Federal Wildlife area and dogs are not permitted in the area. With its location along the Mobile Bay and the Gulf of Mexico is a great destination for water activities as well. Enjoy the beaches here, go kayaking, fishing, or boating.

Looking for a problem-solving challenge? Fort Morgan's Escape Room is a fun and exciting way to engage with groups to build communication and build decision-making skills. This is recommended for adults and kids ages 12 and older, and groups must be a minimum of 4 and maximum of 8.

If you need a quick snack, a full meal, or a beverage, the Historic Southern Grill is located near the ferry landing and is open daily 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. (closed for the winter).
